

Belt and Road Culture Exchange Foundation for Women
Our Mission
The foundation was established with the mission of promoting gender equality in the Belt and Road countries. In the fields of high education and academic circle, the foundation was designed to encourage scholarly exchange and to promote youth population in participating cultural exchange.

Background of the Establishment
In 2012, Dr. Danning Wang was elected the co-chair of Chinese Society of Women Studies(CSWS)and the co-associate director of Gender Research Center (GRC) at Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK).
The main job of the GRC at CUHK was to work with the mainland academic colleagues in coordinating gender studies by introducing overseas researches and scholars to mainland China. The second part of the GRC’s job was to work with scholars in East Asia areas in the field of gender and culture studies. The third section of its work included working with different UN agencies in the region in the field gender and culture studies. We were in contact with UN Women, UNESCO, and ECOSOC.
In 2015 and 2016, Dr. Wang was invited to participate in the peacebuilding process in Northeast Asia and the promotion of gender equality Southeast Asia among the Belt and Road countries. In 2016, under the direction of Dr. Wang’s CUHK colleagues, she started to work on the establishment of the foundation.



Start
During the early planning stage of the foundation, we received support from various sides of Hong Kong society. Madam Rita Fan, former President of the Legislative Council of HK, Madam Elsie Leung, former Secretary for Justice of HK, and Prof. Lau Pui King, former member of National People’s Congress, all gave us detail directions.

Peking University Alumni Association in Hong Kong provided the critical support at various stages of the Foundation.

Develope
In May 2019, Dr. Wang was introduced to Ms. Clarie Ku and we started to work on the registration process of the foundation. On March 29, 2021, the foundation was formally registered in HK and in March 2021, we received our first donation from Ms. Katherine Hung, former board member of Cheung Kong Holdings and Li Ka Shing Foundation.
